The Lowdown on Lip Care: Beyond Just Lipstick

Lipstick may be the finishing touch, but lip care deserves a place in your routine even on makeup-free days. Keep things simple: comfortable lips first, colour second.

Build an everyday routine

Choose a fragrance-free, non-irritating lip balm and apply it throughout the day and before bed. For time outdoors, use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours. Try not to lick, bite or pick your lips, as these habits can make dryness worse.

Give dry lips gentle care

If your lips feel cracked, a plain petroleum-jelly ointment can help retain moisture. Stop using products that sting or burn; that sensation is irritation, not proof that a product is working. If chapping does not improve after two to three weeks, consult a dermatologist. These care recommendations follow American Academy of Dermatology guidance.

Prepare before lipstick

Start with clean lips and a thin layer of balm. Let it settle while you do the rest of your makeup, then gently blot any excess before applying colour. This gives you more control than layering lipstick over a thick, slippery coating.

Apply colour in light layers, working from the centre towards the edges. You do not need a complicated collection: a comfortable balm and a lip colour you enjoy are a good starting point. If colour feels uncomfortable, leave it off and return to your basic care routine.

Make it a habit

Keep your balm somewhere convenient so that care becomes part of getting ready, rather than something you remember only before lipstick. A useful routine is one you can comfortably repeat.
